17 Blog Challenges To Try In 2017.jpg

Blog challenges and daily prompts are a fun and easy way to populate your blog with content and connect with the broader blogging community. There are various challenges, some have begun already and others are yet to come. Here’s a list of my favourite blog challenges for you to participate in this year:

WordPress Daily Prompts

To participate in Daily Prompts, simply publish a post on your own blog that responds to the prompt.

Comments are always closed on prompts, but pingbacks are enabled. If you link to the prompt in your post, your post will appear in the list of responses on The Daily Post.

We also highlight a random, rotating selection of prompt responses on our home page. Don’t normally respond to blogging prompts? Take a look at our tips for making prompts personal.

Weekly Photo Challenge

Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, you’re invited to get involved in our Weekly Photo Challenge to help you meet your blogging goals. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

Each Wednesday, we’ll provide a theme for creative inspiration. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog anytime before the following Wednesday. If you link to the challenge in your post, your post will appear in the list of responses on The Daily Post. Participants use different tags for their challenge entries, like dpchallenge, photo challenge, weekly photo challenge, photography, and postaday, which we explain more below. Feel free to use any tags you’d like.

Postaday

Those of you who have personal goals like posting every day or every week can take part in our Postaday project to stay motivated and focused.

To participate in the challenge, all you need to to is (1) publish every day (or week), and (2) tag your posts with postaday or postaweek to other participants can find them. You can also snag a badge for your blog so everyone knows you’re a Postaday blogger.

Fat Mum Slim Photo A Day Challenge

What is it?

Photo A Day is a photography challenge that’s been going for a really long time, since the January 2012. It’s a beautiful community project where over 23 MILLION {yes, seriously THAT many!} photos have been shared around the world so far.

Starting Date: Daily

How to Sign Up:

So, you want to play Photo A Day, hey? Well, it couldn’t be easier. Here’s how it works:

Each month I reveal a list of words {we call them prompts} that inspire you to take a photo each day. They could be words like yellow, or open, or big, or light, or food, or really anything that will get you to start thinking creatively.

Each day you’ll simply look at the list each day, use the prompt as inspiration and take a photo. See? I told you it was easy. Don’t worry if you’re not the most awesome photographer in the world {I’ll tell you a secret, I’m not either}. The Photo A Day challenge is for everyone; beginners to brilliant. It’s not a competition.

Next, share your photo. You can share where ever you like. You could share on your personal Facebook page, on your business page, on your Instagram feed, or maybe you’d even like to join our friendly Photo A Day Facebook group. If you’re sharing on Instagram, simply use our group hashtag #FMSphotoaday.

Each day I {and a group of awesome friends} share four of our favourite photos shared from each prompt. You can check them out by following @LittleMomentsApp on Instagram.

You can see the latest list by clicking RIGHT HERE. You can also grab the Photo A Day iPhone & iPad App by clicking RIGHT HERE. If you want the list emailed to you each month, subscribe RIGHT HERE.

30 Day Blogging Challenge

What is it?

We (the folks at 30DayBlogChallenge) run a blog and website service called 30dayblogchallenge.com and would love for you to use it. All of our services are free, but we might recommend certain paid services to take use of.

Our service is designed to teach you and give you tips about starting a blog, as well as encourage you to express yourself freely. Our focus is mainly towards “New bloggers” i.e. people that want to start a blog for their first time.

Now since a lot of people that start a blog, don’t really have an idea of what to do, what to write or even how to setup their blog. We thought, what better way than to make a “Challenge”. 30 Days, where the participants will be given a daily task to do (related to their blog of course) and this way, see if they have what it takes to become a long-term blogger.

The tasks you will receive during the challenge are simple tasks.. It could be a show-and-tell how you change the design og your blog, it could be “today you have to write a blog post”, or perhaps something social-related, like integrating fanpages and social media on your blog.

Starting Date: Anytime

How to Sign Up:

Now the tasks will be sent daily to your e-mail. This way you don’t “cheat” by going forward, like 90% of you guys would do, if you had everything in front of you at once That’s actually very important though.. A blog needs to grow naturally over time, you can’t just hammer out 40 posts in a day and expect that to work. But we will go a lot more into detail about this stuff during the challenge.

Once you’re done with the 30 Day Challenge, you will have received a comprehensive tour of what it takes to run a blog first hand, how you can promote it and the tools you can implement for monetizing your traffic.

ROW80Logocopy.jpg

ROW80 – A Round Of Words In 80 Days Writing Challenge

What is it?

We are all different and we all have different demands on our time.  Why should we all have the same goal?  The simple answer is that we shouldn’t.  If you want to be a writer, then you have to be able to roll with the punches and adapt to your changing circumstances.  If that means changing your goals when your life blows up, so be it.  ROW80 is the challenge that champions the marriage of writing and real life. For more on why I started it, see this post.

Starting Date: 2 April

Rules:

  • We have 4 rounds a year, each running 80 days.
  • Your goal can be anything you like as long as it is measurable (e.g. number of words/pages, specified amount of time to spend on writing per day/week, number of pages edited, etc.–for more on what makes a measurable goal, see this post).
  • Once you have settled on a goal, you write it up on your blog (yes, you must have one) and link to it on the Goals Post at the beginning of each Round.
  • If your goal changes before the end of the 80 days, simply write up a new goals post and link to it on the latest check-in day post here on our blog or in our Facebook Group.
  • We have check-ins twice a week on Wednesday and Sundays where you will update us the same way (e.g. write up a blog post of your progress and link to it on that day’s Post).
  • On Twitter we use a hashtag of #ROW80 if you wanna come hang out; feel free to host sprints, share links.  See the next point…
  • And if you happen to find us after a round has begun, just write up your goals post and hop on in whenever.  We’re a friendly bunch.
  • Be sure to grab the ROW80 badge from the sidebar on the ROW80 Blog (right click, save image location, then chuck it in your blog’s image widget or grab some basic image html and use a text widget).

Sign Up:

You decide to join, and then you do.

The ROW80 isn’t about forms and applications. It’s about getting things done and supporting each other while we do it. So, if you;re interested in joining our friendly community, jump on in. It doesn’t matter if it’s the beginning of a round, the middle, or even a day or two from the end. Just anounce you’re going to do it, and do it.

There are two ways to keep your fellow ROWers appraised of your progress:

  1.  here on the Blog
  2. our Facebook group

Check in with us twice a week (Sundays and Wednesdays).

Once you’ve done that: visit your fellow ROWers through the check-in linkies, cheer them on where they’ve got great things going, support if they need it.  It’s as simple, and as challenging, as that.

  1. What a fantastic list of challenges you have compiled. Thank you so much for featuring the Six Word Story Challenge, it’s growing in popularity and we are always happy to feature new authors.

I’ll be sure to take part in some of these challenges, some of them have huge creative potential.

      1. So, I noticed that it started on the 7th of March so I sent a message begging to allow me to start late. Fingers crossed. 🙂
You can read as many of my posts as you like, Lindsay. It would be my pleasure to welcome you. The kettle is on. 😉

      2. Oh gosh, you’re absolutely right, Lindsay (and I am a fule) – it is the 7th of May!
Weak tea – decaf if possible, with loads of milk, no sugar and served piping hot. Well, you did ask! 😉

  2. Great selection! Networking with other bloggers/writers is always fun.
For writers, I’ll add doing the monthly Insecure Writers Support Group http://www.insecurewriterssupportgroup.com/p/iwsg-sign-up.html (one post on the first Wednesday of the month, and visiting others on the list) and the new #AuthorToolboxBlogHop https://raimeygallant.wordpress.com/2017/03/22/authortoolboxbloghop/ that starts this month (one post on the third Wednesday of the month, and visiting others on the list).
    Happy A-to-Z-ing 🙂

    1. Thank you for the additions to the list. I’ve heard of the Insecure Writers Support Group – it’s definitely something I want to try. I wasn’t aware of the second one. It seems like this year is too short for all these challenges. Haha!

      1. I’ve actually done a few of them but there are some on the list that I haven’t heard of before. I plan to check them out and see which ones I will want to do. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much. I haven’t participated in NaNoWriMo, but this year is my year as well. I’m still on the fence about the Kindness Challenge for now. I hope you find a challenge or two to try. Have a lovely day. ❤

  3. Some of these sound really fun! I would love to post once a day for a month, but I don’t think I’d get any sleep. Maybe every third day would be a good compromise. #stayclassymama

  4. Reblogged this on Sometimes Stellar Storyteller and commented:
I’ve been dying to bring you this post, not just because our Six Word Story Challenge is in it, but because there are so many challenges listed in here that we should all try.

I’m going to start moving my way around them, it would be great to see some familiar friendly storytellers in the comments too!

    Jump in, have a go!

  5. Wow you have put some serious effort into compiling all of these, amazing! I like the look of the fat mum slim photo competition and the blog traffic grower. I am always impressed by people that manage to stick too these, the blogmas etc. They really help get you into the swing of publishing. What a fantastic post. Thank you for linking to #stayclassymama xx

    1. Thank you! I’m so glad that the effort comes across. I failed at Blogmas last year, but it was because my husband was working away and we saw him for the first time in months so I had no time to complete it. Better luck this year, I suppose. I can’t wait to check out this week’s #stayclassymama linky. Have a wonderful day :).

  6. These all sound interesting. I would like to start the weekly photo challenge when I have more time which I will have when I retire in the next year or so. Thanks for putting them all in a post that makes it easier to access the options.
